Can You Just Add Struts? The Honest Answer on Garage Door Reinforcement in Palm Coast

It is the most reasonable question a Palm Coast homeowner can ask, and we get it every August.

“My garage door is fine. It works. Can you just add some struts or a brace kit and make it hurricane rated, instead of me spending money on a whole new door?”

We would love to say yes. It would be an easy sale and a short afternoon.

But we went looking for something that would let us say it honestly — a product approval, a code section, a manufacturer’s engineering position, anything. Here is what four independent sources actually say, including the trade body the door manufacturers themselves run.

The short answer, and then the evidence

A brace is storm preparation. It is not code compliance, and it is not an upgrade to your door’s rating.

Those are two different things that get sold as one thing, and the difference matters both to your building official and to your insurer.

Now the evidence, because you should not take our word for it any more than anyone else’s.

1. The manufacturers’ own trade body does not treat kits as a compliance path

DASMA — the Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association — writes the test standards the code points to. Its technical data sheet on wind load, TDS-168, addresses retrofitted doors in exactly one sentence, and it is a punt:

“The authority having jurisdiction determines the source for applicable wind load provisions to garage doors including retrofitted garage doors.”

That is the entire treatment. The document does not discuss reinforcement kits, struts or braces as methods of achieving a rating anywhere in its text. If bolting on struts were a recognised compliance route, this is the document that would say so.

2. A major manufacturer advises against it in writing

Clopay, one of the largest residential door manufacturers in the United States, published this in January 2026:

“Rather than attempting to reinforce an existing garage door with kits or add-ons, which can cause balance, safety, or code compliance issues, it’s safer to choose a new, wind-rated door.”

And, on the same page:

“Aftermarket add-ons typically can’t provide the same level of protection found in purpose-built wind-rated doors.” … “Retrofitting older doors can introduce problems with balance, opener compatibility, and everyday operation.”

Read that last line as a practical warning rather than a legal one. A sectional door is a balanced system. The springs are wound to counterweight a specific door mass. Add steel to the panels and you have changed the mass without changing the counterweight — which is felt first by the opener, then by the springs, and eventually by whoever is standing under it.

3. IBHS does not accept them

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety runs the FORTIFIED programme. Its garage door technical bulletin lists what qualifies: pressure-rated doors carrying a permanent design-pressure label, or equivalent certified test reports — a Miami-Dade NOA, a Florida Building Code approval, a Texas Department of Insurance evaluation, or an ICC-ES report. Then it says:

“If the documentation outlined above is not provided, it will be deemed to NOT meet FORTIFIED Home requirements.”

Reinforcement kits are not listed as an acceptable alternative. Not rejected in an argument — simply not among the things that count.

4. The federal guidance names two paths, and a brace is neither

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center, run by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, gives exactly two code-recognised options for a garage door in a high-wind area:

  1. Install a pressure-rated door that meets the design pressures for the site; or
  2. Protect the existing door with an impact-resistant covering that protects the entire door and is certified to resist the design wind pressure.

Option two is a certified shutter or panel system over the whole opening. It is not a brace inside the door. That distinction — something covering the door versus something stiffening the door — is the whole argument in one line.

The fair counterpoint, because there is one

We are not going to pretend the other side does not exist.

Florida’s own Division of Emergency Management wind mitigation booklet lists three garage door retrofit options, and one of them is “adding a bracing bar behind each panel.” That is a state publication, and it says what it says.

Two things about it, stated plainly:

  • It offers no cost data and makes no compliance claim. It does not say a braced door meets the code, achieves a design pressure rating, or qualifies for an insurance credit.
  • It sits in a booklet about reducing damage, which is a different question from meeting a standard.

So the honest reconciliation is this: a brace may well make your door survive a storm it would otherwise have lost. That is worth something. It is simply not the same thing as a rating, and anyone selling it as a rating is selling you something they cannot deliver.

Why a permanent add-on cannot quietly sidestep the approval system

This is the part that settles it in Florida specifically, and it is statutory.

Florida Statutes § 553.842 sets up the statewide product approval system. Subsection (5) mandates statewide approval for a named list of products, and two entries on that list matter here: “exterior doors” and “impact protective systems.”

So a garage door needs approval. And a system installed to protect an opening needs approval. There is no third category for “metal parts added to a door to change how it performs” that escapes both.

The approval also has to cover the assembly as installed — which is precisely why Flagler County’s garage door permit packet demands plans and scope “with wind loads and fastening details,” a product approval form, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions physically on site at inspection. The county also states that the applicant carries “sole responsibility to verify that specific products have been installed in accordance with their limitations.”

The City of Palm Coast’s building permit checklist asks for the same thing for a garage door replacement: a Product Approval Spec Sheet, with the detail and installation sheets in the field at inspection time.

The one-minute test for any kit anybody offers you

You do not have to argue about engineering. You can settle it with a search box.

If a product is approved for use in Florida, it has a Florida Product Approval number, and that number is public. Ask for it. Then look it up yourself at floridabuilding.org/pr/pr_app_srch.aspx.

If the answer is a number, you can read exactly what it was approved for, under what conditions, and with what fastening. If the answer is a brochure, a photograph of a test, or “it exceeds code,” you have your answer.

We could not find a Florida Product Approval for any garage door reinforcement or wind-load kit. We are not saying none exists — we are saying we looked and did not find one, and that we will not claim otherwise until somebody shows us the number.

What the standards actually test, so the labels stop being noise

Two numbers get used interchangeably in advertising and they measure completely different things.

DASMA 115’s own scope says it determines whether the door can “remain unbreached during a windstorm due to windborne debris.” It incorporates provisions from ASTM E1886 and ASTM E1996.

And on positive versus negative, DASMA puts it about as plainly as it can be put:

“Positive pressures are loads that try to push your garage door into the building, and negative pressures try to pull the door out of the building.”

Negative is usually the bigger number, and on a two-storey house it gets bigger still — because, as DASMA explains, a breached upper-floor window raises interior pressure that then equalises down at garage door level. Your door can be pulled outward by a window failing upstairs.

Where your door’s real numbers are written down

You do not need an inspector for this part. Florida Building Code — Residential § R609.4.1 requires a permanent manufacturer’s label on the door, and it has to carry:

  • Manufacturer and model or series
  • The positive and negative design pressure rating
  • The impact-rated designation, if it has one
  • A reference to the installation instruction drawing
  • The Florida or Miami-Dade product approval number
  • The applicable test standards

Go and look. It is usually on the inside face of one of the panels, or on the end stile. If there is no label of that kind, the door was either installed before the labelling requirement or is not a rated door — and either way, that is the finding.

So what numbers does a Palm Coast door actually need?

The honest version has a range in it and a caveat after it.

Flagler County’s own wind speed zones map, drawn in January 2024, puts Risk Category II buildings — ordinary houses — at an ultimate design wind speed of 130 mph countywide. Under the code’s conversion table, Vult 130 corresponds to Vasd 101 mph.

As an independent cross-check from a different direction: IBHS sets the FORTIFIED Home High Wind Silver minimum garage door rating at +23 / −29 psf, and states that this “corresponds to 130 mph wind speed in Exposure C conditions.”

Two caveats we are not going to bury. First, the DASMA table above is drawn against ASCE 7-16, and the current 8th Edition of the Florida Building Code uses ASCE 7-22 — the values are close but we could not locate a published ASCE 7-22 version of that table, so do not treat these as code-exact. Second, and more importantly: the required pressure for your house comes from your exposure category, door size and mean roof height, determined by the designer or the building official for your specific address. It does not come from a table in a blog post, including this one.

The bit almost everyone gets wrong about impact rating

This one is worth being careful with, because the internet is confidently wrong about it.

The Florida Building Code defines the wind-borne debris region as areas within hurricane-prone regions located either:

  1. Within one mile of the mean high-water line where an Exposure D condition exists upwind at the waterline and the ultimate design wind speed is 130 mph or greater; or
  2. In areas where the ultimate design wind speed is 140 mph or greater.

Flagler County’s Risk Category II speed is 130 mph. Because that is below 140, the second prong is not triggered anywhere in the county. Only the coastal prong can put a Flagler property inside the region — which is exactly why both the county and the city publish a discrete “Windborne Debris Line” as its own map layer, separate from the wind speed contours. A line is only worth drawing if some properties are on each side of it.

We are not going to tell you which side your house is on. The published maps are raster images, and resolving that line against real streets to the standard a published claim deserves is not something we can do from a PDF. It is an address-level question, and the building official is the only authoritative answer.

And here is the part that gets misquoted. The code’s opening-protection section is written against glazed openings — it requires impact-resistant glazing or an impact-resistant covering meeting ANSI/DASMA 115 for garage doors and rolling doors. So:

“Every garage door in the debris region must be impact rated” is not what the code text says. It is repeated everywhere, and it is a simplification that can cost you money on a door you did not need. It can also go the other way: some building officials require full-assembly impact testing for any opening in the region. Ask before you buy, not after.

What actually happens to a door that is not rated

IBHS tested this at full scale, at wind speeds it describes as reaching well above 100 mph, and identified three ways doors go:

  1. High winds buckle weak door tracks.
  2. Flying debris pierces the door.
  3. Inadequate structural attachment lets the whole assembly collapse inward.

Note that the first and third are about the system — the track and its alignment, the fasteners, the jamb attachment — not the panels. That is another reason a panel brace is an incomplete answer: it addresses the flat surface and leaves the load path alone.

And then the cascade. The Department of Energy’s guidance describes the mechanism without any hedging:

“A garage-door failure is a huge breach of the building envelope. This breach can allow strong winds to enter the building, where they can increase internal pressures to the point that they push out windows, walls, doors, and roofs, causing building failure.”

It adds a line that surprises most homeowners: “Water entry is often less of a concern than the internal pressure increase that garage-door failures can allow.”

The single most useful statistic we found, from IBHS:

90% of homes whose garage door survived the storm had no structural damage to the roof.

IBHS research findings

IBHS backs the connection with post-event field investigations after Hurricane Ike in 2008, the Joplin tornado in 2011 and the Moore, Oklahoma tornado in 2013, reporting that garage door damage was more likely to lead to structural damage elsewhere in the home.

The reason is geometry as much as anything. A 16×7 double door is 112 square feet of building envelope in one assembly. A typical window is twelve to fifteen. It is the largest hole in your house, and it is the one closed by the lightest thing.

Where a brace does make sense

We have spent this article arguing against a product, so it is only fair to say where the idea is sound.

A temporary, removable brace deployed before a storm is a legitimate preparedness measure. It is in the state’s own booklet. If your door is not rated, replacing it is not in the budget this month, and a storm is four days out, a brace is better than nothing and we would rather you had one.

What it is not:

  • It is not a code compliance route. It will not satisfy a permit or an inspection.
  • It is not a design pressure rating. Your door still has whatever rating it has, which may be none.
  • It is not an insurance credit. Wind mitigation credits are evidenced by verified ratings and labels, not by hardware in the garage.
  • It is not permanent. Anything left bolted on becomes part of the assembly, and the assembly is what has to be approved.

Treat it the way you treat plywood over a window: real protection, honestly temporary, and not a substitute for the thing it is standing in for.

If you are going to replace it, the sequencing that saves money

  1. Read the label on your current door first. § R609.4.1 means the answer may already be in your garage. If there is a design pressure and an approval number on it, you may need less than you think.
  2. Find out which side of the debris line your address is on before you shop. It changes whether glazing has to be impact rated, and that is a real price difference. City of Palm Coast Building Division: 386-986-3780. Flagler County Building Department: 386-313-4003.
  3. Ask for the product approval number of the door you are quoted, and look it up yourself. Two minutes, and it tells you the conditions and the fastening the approval actually covers.
  4. Check whether grant money applies before you sign anything. My Safe Florida Home lists garage doors among its covered improvements. Note that the programme’s own materials and its FAQ have said different things about the application window, so verify status before you plan around it.
  5. Ask your insurance agent to quote it both ways — current door and rated door — before you buy. Florida law requires insurers to give actuarially supported credits for opening protection and to send you a notice showing your exact dollar savings, so the number for your house is obtainable.   6. Sort the permit. Both the city and the county require one for a garage door replacement, and both publish a specific packet for it. What the 2026 permit-exemption law did and did not change is here: the HB 803 permit exemption.

One more thing about the timing

We are writing this on 21 August 2026, and we are not going to manufacture urgency.

NOAA’s updated seasonal outlook, issued 6 August, calls for a below-normal Atlantic season — the probability of below normal rose to 75%, with 7 to 13 named storms forecast including the two already recorded, 2 to 6 hurricanes and 0 to 2 major hurricanes, driven by a developing strong El Niño. As of today the National Hurricane Center reports no tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.

That is a statement about the basin, not about your street. A below-normal forecast still contains up to six hurricanes, the season peaks in September, and it takes exactly one.

For local calibration rather than drama: Hurricane Milton in October 2024 left at least 100 Palm Coast homes with wind damage, one damaged up to 80 per cent, and roughly 19 million dollars in residential damage across Flagler County — with 16 inches of rain in 24 hours at the peak. The mayor at the time characterised most of it as cosmetic. That is what a storm that did not make landfall here still managed.

What we could not verify

  • Whether any specific reinforcement or wind-load kit holds a Florida Product Approval. We searched and found none. If a supplier has one, the number will prove it.
  • Which side of the windborne debris line any particular Palm Coast address falls on. The published maps are raster images and we will not guess. Nor will we tell you the line follows the Intracoastal, A1A, US-1 or I-95 — that claim circulates widely and we found no source for it.
  • Whether a solid, unglazed garage door inside the debris region must be impact tested. The code’s opening-protection provision is written against glazed openings; building official practice may be stricter.
  • Whether replacing only an opener, springs or a single panel requires a permit here. Neither the city nor the county publishes an exemption list that mentions them. Call and ask.
  • Current permit fee amounts. Palm Coast publishes two fee summaries that conflict, and the Flagler schedule we found carries no current effective date. Use the city’s online fee calculator or ring the numbers above.
  • Any specific insurance credit percentage. The statewide discount tables are in a spreadsheet we could not parse, and the notice form’s figures are populated per policy by the insurer.
  • My Safe Florida Home’s application status and funding level today. The programme homepage and its FAQ give different impressions. Verify directly.
  • Any garage door failure rate from a named hurricane. The FEMA assessment reports were not reachable. The IBHS 90 per cent figure above is the one verified statistic we have.
